The‘FedEx Delivers Heartbeats’ Rural Outreach Clinics program offersfree specialty healthcare and medical treatment to children withcongenital heart defects (CHDs) in rural Vietnam.
According to the Ministry of Health of Vietnam, approximately15,000 children in Vietnam are born with CHDs each year. In 2024,the FedEx Delivers Heartbeats program will concentrate its effortson 25 remote regions requiring urgent healthcaresupport.[1] Volunteercardiologists and surgeons from across Vietnam will journey tothese remote areas, establishing mobile clinics to performexaminations, diagnoses, and surgery plans for children . The aimis to screen over 50,000 children for CHDs, with an anticipated1.1% diagnosis rate. With these projections, the program aims atpositively impacting at least 396 young lives this year.
Disadvantaged children requiring surgery are placed on the nationalcardiac surgery waiting list. Additional arrangements are made toensure that post-operative care does not entail costly and lengthytrips to hospitals in major cities in Vietnam.
“This year marks a significant milestone for FedEx as wecommemorate our 30th anniversaryin Vietnam, and the FedEx Delivers Heartbeats program perfectlyembodies our goal of connecting people with possibilities,” saidEe-Hui Tan, Managing Director of FedEx Express Vietnam andCambodia. “We are proud of the significant impact this program hascreated over the last 13 years. The value this program brings inhelping these children live healthy lives fuels our dedication tofurther the program’s reach and impact to create brighter futuresfor the next generation.”
Since 2011, the FedEx Delivers Heartbeats program has conductedmore than 1,005 clinics in 48 provinces in Vietnam, screening atotal of 333,119 children. Among them, 7,698 previously undiagnosedcases of CHDs were identified.
“Each year, approximately 1% of children are born with congenitalheart defects.
