DHL Supply Chain, the Americas leader in contract logistics andpart of Deutsche Post DHL Group, is preparing for an anticipatedsurge in demand in the fourth of 2020 by hiring additionalworkers and leveraging its investments in technology andinfrastructure to support customers. The third party logisticsprovider today announced that it will hire 7,000 associates throughthe end of 2020 to meet demand fueled both by the peak holidayshopping season and the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“’Peak season’ for contract logistics providers typically takesplace in the late summer months and is driven principally by asurge in retail inventory, which has increasingly moved to onlinechannels in recent years,” said Scott Sureddin, CEO, DHL SupplyChain North America. “This year, with an accelerated shift towarde-commerce, non-retail industries potentially seeing a resurgencein pent-up demand, and consumer goods and life sciences andhealthcare companies continuing to ramp up their productioncapabilities, many of our customers are facing their mostunpredictable fourth ever. DHL Supply Chain’s investmentsare aimed at providing them with both the operational certainty andthe flexibility that they will need to adjust their supply chainsto meet consumer demand. DHL Supply Chain has announced a number of investments intechnology and infrastructure in 2020 that are targeted inparticular at the retail and life sciences and healthcareindustries. In March, it committed to expand its fleet of LocusBotcollaborative robots to 1,000 by the end of the year in order toboost productivity and throughput, primarily in its retail and lifesciences and healthcare operations. In June, DHL Supply Chainannounced an investment of USD 60 million in its life sciences andhealthcare network, building on a USD 150 million investment thatit committed to the sector in 2019 The company also established adedicated E-Commerce sector this year to strengthen its operationaland commercial focus on this fast-growing segment and to supportcustomers who are building out new online and omnichannelofferings.
While contributing to a massive shift in volume dynamics andchannels to customers across all industries, the COVID-19 pandemichas also added a new layer of operational complexity to this year’speak season. DHL Supply Chain has been forced to make a number ofadjustments within its facilities to allow for the proper socialdistancing to keep the increased number of associates safe. The useof collaborative robots and accelerated digitalization in many ofthe company’s operations will help to ensure that safety protocolsare followed even with higher volumes. DHL Supply Chain’sOperations and Engineering teams in North America have also takensteps to redesign existing infrastructure and processes and tobuild out additional capacity to handle the upcoming peak.
